In contrast to the awful deal approved the other day for the return of the bodies of Regev and Goldwasser, the Knesset finally did something intelligent they should have done a long time ago. They finally approved a law (52-24) that prevents any MK from traveling to an enemy country (as defined by Israel). Doing so prevents them from running for Knesset for the next 7 years (and from the Jpost article it seems to infer that it may be somewhat retroactive)
Whose up in arms about this? You got it. All the Arab MK’s. ‘This is racist’. ‘This is unconstitutional’. Of course its not racist because it applies to ANYONE who is a member of the Knesset, Arab/Muslim and not. And, while I’m sure it will go to the Supreme Court for a final ruling, for now, it makes total sense. Azmi Bishara, in his capacity as MK, regularly visited Lebanon and Syria and who knows who he met and spoke to there. There was suspicion that he fed information to Hezbollah during the 2nd Lebanon War. When he was to be questioned by the police he ran. Generally, guilty people don’t run, so you can see where this is going.
The Arab MK’s argue that they should be allowed to visit Arab countries, but really, aren’t they citizens of Israel too? Subject to all the laws therein? They ever hear of a phone? Would Israel be condemned if an MK went to Iran and had a meeting with the military or with Ahmadinejad and they suspended or interrogated him/her? Of course not. I’m a US citizen and I’m forbidden to go to Cuba. I deal with it. They should deal too. Congrats to the Knesset for passing a law that makes sense.
